Dear Young Austin,
Look at how cute you are (take advantage of that now, it doesn’t last), so young and innocent. Looks like I was tasked to tell you what you could have done better– probably with the better interest for both of us in mind.
Read this closely when I say the next few years are going to be likely some of the best and worst of your life. Sadly you will come to learn that life is nothing more than the best and worst times. You cannot change this. Instead of wishing life was different and being despaired over the idea that a portion of your limited time on this planet will be spent upset, focus on finding the right people to spend all moments, good or bad, with – for they can take the worst situations and remind you of the best. Your friends will be your best chance at happiness in the upcoming years. You will eventually discover they are your reason for trying, but I will leave you to figure out what that means. Just always try to remember that no matter how poor you feel, it will get better – trust me, I know after all. Don’t forget that your friends will come and go. Those who you thought you would know forever, left as if they never even knew you in the first place. This is just another part of life.
Stay in school. Your life doesn’t suck. Everything gets better. Be there for your friends and they will be there for you. Learn to care for your family, as they are the ones who will never leave. Don’t be afraid to try and fail, honestly, no one else cares what you are failing at, and even if they do, they will forget it once something else distracts them. Throw yourself into uncomfortable situations, those will be your favorite memories. Join spirit weeks, join band, and join everything you have the slightest interest in because, you will regret net getting involved– you may dislike something in the end but at least you tried. You will only regret not joining all the activities. You will regret all the missed chances to gain more friends. Don’t make the same mistake I did. I can’t get that time back.
Trust the words I imbued into this letter, I am you after all– just a slightly wiser and more superior you. This is to the better version of me- the better version of us. You got this, I believe in you.
You are always the best you can be,
Sincerely,
Future Austin Fitzpatrick
